Ten nights

First safari, children 5 – 8

Short drives, two nights per camp, and it ends in a swimming pool.

  1. Night 1

    Nairobi

Absorb the flight. Nairobi National Park in the morning if you land early — rhino and lion twenty minutes from the city.

  2. Nights 2–3

    Ol Pejeta

Three to four hours by road on tarmac. Rhino close to reliably, the chimpanzee sanctuary, lion tracking, and a night drive. Short drives throughout.

  3. Nights 4–6

    Laikipia

A short hop. High, cool and comfortable in the middle of the day. Riding for the children, walking for anyone who wants it, and a family house if the party suits it.

  4. Nights 7–10

    Diani

Fly via Nairobi. Warm shallow water at the right tides, a pool, and nothing scheduled. This is the half they will talk about.

Fourteen nights

The classic family fortnight, children 8 – 12

Adds the Mara, which works properly from about eight.

  1. Night 1

    Nairobi

Arrival night. Do not connect straight onto a light aircraft.

  2. Nights 2–3

    Ol Pejeta

Rhino, chimps and a gentle start by road.

  3. Nights 4–6

    Laikipia

Riding, walking and night drives. A family house works well here.

  4. Nights 7–9

    Masai Mara

Fly. Three nights in a conservancy, where a private vehicle and off-road driving make an enormous difference with children.

  5. Nights 10–14

    Diani

Five nights. Snorkelling, a dhow trip, and a great deal of doing nothing.

Twelve nights

Built for teenagers, 13+

More active, less driving, and they get a role rather than a seat.

  1. Night 1

    Nairobi

    Arrival.

  2. Nights 2–5

    Laikipia

Four nights: riding, a two-day walking safari with a fly camp, night drives, and time with the conservation team. The part they will remember.

  3. Nights 6–8

    Masai Mara

A conservancy, private vehicle, and a guide who talks to them like adults.

  4. Nights 9–12

    Diani or Watamu

Learn to dive, or kitesurf if the wind is up. Give them an activity and a certificate to take home.
